What is a VHF omnidirectional range used in a flight plan?

VOR which is short for VHF omnidirectional radio range, is a type of short range radio navigation system for aircraft in a flight plan, enabling aircraft to determine their position and stay on course by receiving radio signals transmitted by a network of fixed ground radio beacons, with a receiver unit.

They use radio frequencies in the very high frequency (VHF) band from 108 to 117.95 MHz. Developed in the US beginning in 1937 and deployed in 1946, VOR is the standard air navigational system in the world used by bother commercial and general aviation. There are about 3000 VOR stations around the world.

History and background
Developed from earlier Visual-Aural Range (VAR) systems, the VOR was designed to provide 360 courses and from the station, selectable by the pilot. Early vacuum tube transmitters with mechanically rotated antennas were widely installed in the 1950s and began to be replaced with fully solid state units in the early 1960s.

They became the major radio navigation system of the 1960s when they took over from the older radio beacon and four course system. Some of the older range stations survived, with the four course directional features removed, as non directional low or medium frequency radio beacons.

Features used for a flight plan
VORs signals provide considerably greater accuracy and reliability than NDBs due to a combination of factors. VHF radio is less vulnerable to diffraction or course bending around terrain features and coastlines. Phase encoding suffers less interference from thunderstorms.

VOR signals offer a predictable accuracy of 90 meters, 2 sigma at 2nm from a pair of VOR beacons; as compared to the accuracy of unaugmented GPS which is less than 13 meters. VOR stations rely on the ‘line of sight’ because they operate in VHF band so if the transmitting antenna cannot be seen on a perfectly clear day from the receiving antenna, a useful signal cannot be received.

This limits VOR (and DME) range to the horizon or closer if mountains intervene. Although the modern solid state transmitting equipment requires much less maintenance than the older units, an extensive network of stations, needed to provide reasonable coverage along main air routes, is a significant cost in operating current airway systems in a flight plan.

What To Look For In A Walkie Talkie Radio

Standard

communication managementWhat will you do if i stated I have found a two way radio short article that is not only interesting but educational as well? I knew you would not believe me, walkie talkie 5 mile radius so here it is the enlightening, superb and fascinating piece

When it comes to walkie talkies the bottom line is that handsfree two way radio communications for the private sector have come a long way over the last two decades. Everybody used to love to talk on the CB radio, but it wasn’t incredibly practical for everyday use because odds are you are not going to have a radio man-pack at your disposal. The compact nature of today’s long range walkie talkie communications equipment makes it a great asset for families and businesses alike.

A very nice looking walkie talkie is available with the Long-range versions. It is a FRS mini 2-way radio with very low output power. The push to talk function ensures that one does not have to fumble over the talk button and the scan, call and alert feature helps even more so.

This device spans over twenty-two channels, which vary basis locations, and like most other products of this genre, it has a range of about five kilometers. The built in LED torch also comes in handy in the dark. This isn’t a kids 2-way radio so make sure to pick up a cheaper model for them.

In order to take all the necessary communication measures, it is important to have a reliable device like walkie talkie available at all times. The range of the walkie talkies that you would like to have can vary from the way you want to use it. A good range of a walkie talkie that can be used in all kind of activities should be around five miles.

The walkie talkies that have long range work like radio stations and one can expect to have clear voice from them in all weather conditions. A reliable and good walkie talkie headset should offer the users not only good voice quality, but it should also be solid enough to last for a long time. At places where communication is required within a particular area, small range walkie talkies can also be used to fulfill the need.

In addition, optional Service from the Start provides multi-year peace of mind with fast repair turnaround times, expert telephone technical support and access to the latest software releases2; all backed by Motorola’s globally integrated services infrastructure, highly qualified support technicians and certified repair facilities.

Walking the Talkie

As sophisticated smartphones continue to proliferate, it’s easy to see why some people would think of walkie-talkies as outdated technologies. That’s especially true when you consider that many smartphone apps now simulate walkie-talkie PTT capabilities.

But even with said apps, cell phones are nothing like walkie-talkies. Cell phones will always be dependent on cellular towers, and even with those apps, they don’t provide the instantaneous communication of a walkie-talkie. For outdoors lovers or anyone else who strays out of range of cell phone networks, there’s no substitute for these handheld radios.

What’s more, walkie-talkie manufacturers are constantly improving their products and even tying them to the popularity of smartphones. Cobra Electronics, for instance, makes a Bluetooth-enabled handset that works through your cell phone to make and receive calls. So while you’re plummeting through rapids, your phone can remain stowed safely away while you call out on your walkie-talkie.

Cobra also equips some models with a rewind button. So if you miss part of a transmission, you can push the button to hear up to 20 seconds of audio, which means you won’t have to ask the sender to repeat the message.

Power and sensitivity continue to increase, and prices continue to go down. And if you’re willing to spend more? You’ll get bigger handsets with motorola cp040 2 way radio a lot more manual controls, and — just as important — larger batteries that last longer between charges.

More and more walkie-talkies also come with ruggedized components so that they’ll withstand the abuse of the outdoors. Many are water-resistant and some even float. And many models now come with voice activation (VOX) so that you don’t even have to press a button to begin speaking.

All of these advances speak to the continuing relevance and usefulness of walkie-talkies. For a decades-old radio technology, that’s serious longevity, especially in the face of so many new communications devices. For now, walkie-talkies and their radio-based brethren are here to stay. Over … and out.
